Investing in our Future
Long before “sustainability” and community involvement became an important business objectives, our founders established, and insisted upon, policies that balanced the needs of employees, shareholders, customers, local communities, and society. Today, National continues to build upon this heritage, not just because it is socially responsible, but also because it represents sound management and smart business operating practices.

In particular, National has always supported initiatives that strengthen our local communities. We understand that being a good neighbor is an integral part of conducting good business; that investments in our local communities are investments in a brighter future for everyone. This is especially true in developing countries, but National’s employees around the world give back to their communities, with donations of time and money to support education, the arts, and public health.

National Starch & Chemical Argentina (NSCAR) won the 2004 ICI Leadership Award for Sustainability in the Community Involvement category for teaching and coaching disadvantaged children in State School #56 in Chivilcoy, Argentina to develop self-reliance and an enterprising spirit (right). Similar educational initiatives are underway in National’s communities in Mexico, Chile, South Africa, U.S., Europe, Asia – practically everywhere you find us.

Public health and human services is another area that National’s people support, especially in developing countries and rural areas. For instance, at National Starch Chile, our employees are involved in a program called A Roof For Chile – a program of building houses for the poor, and for building morale and team spirit among National’s people.

Sometimes the need for human services is more immediate. Shortly after the tsunami disaster of December, 2004, devastated large areas of southern Thailand, National’s employees lined up to give blood, and three people from our Bangkok office volunteered to serve as translators between foreign relief workers and the local officials and victims. The company and its employees worldwide have contributed more than $200,000 (US) to several organizations for tsunami relief efforts, with most business units matching employee donations dollar for dollar.
